2 October 1998: ADDITIVES - Amendment to Food Additives’ Directive

JFSSG Letter, 2 October 1998

Amendment to Food Additives’ Directive

In March, a Common Position had been adopted on amendments to the ‘miscellaneous additives Directive (95/2/EC). Following the approval without amendment of the Common Position text by the European Parliament at is second meeting in July, the amending Directive was formally adopted by the Council on 28 September. The new Directive will now be published in the Official Journal.

Member States will be required to amend their national legislation to implement the provisions of the new Directive and, subject to Ministerial agreement, there will be a consultation in the UK so as to amend the Miscellaneous Food Additives Regulations 1995. It is estimated that consultation will be in December 1998/January 1999, with the new Regulations becoming effective in May/June 1999.
