3 April 1998: PARNUTS - Commission Directive amending Directive 96/5/EC on Processed Cereal-Based Foods and Baby Foods for Infants and Young Children

MAFF/DoH Letter, 3 April 1998

Commission Directive amending Directive 96/5/EC on Processed Cereal-Based Foods and Baby Foods for Infants and Young Children

MAFF had consulted on this proposed Directive in 1997 (See
2 May 1997). It was subsequently agreed in the EC Standing Committee for Foodstuffs on 17/18 December 1997. The Ministry has been waiting for publication in the Official Journal. However, since this is taking a long time, the letter includes a copy of the agreed amending Directive.

The Directive introduces maximum limits for vitamins and minerals as well as introducing new protein requirements to enable the continued marketing of a number of customary products (i.e. pour over sauces, cheese dishes and dairy desserts)

The Directive requires Member States to introduce regulations by 31 December 1998 to permit the marketing of complying products from that date and to prohibit trade in non-complying products by 1 January 2000. Consultation on draft implementing legislation for Great Britain to amend the current Regulations (SI 1997 No 2042) will take place later in the year.
