18 June 1997: LOT MARKING - Lot Marking of Fruit and Vegetables

MAFF Letter, 18 June 1997

Lot Marking of Fruit and Vegetables

The European branch organisation representing the Euroepan importers, exporters and wholesalers of fresh produce (EUCOFEL) has put a case to the Commission seeking an exemption from the lot marking requirements of Directive 89/396 for fresh fruit and vegetables. According to the Directive, only pre-packed fruit and vegetables have to be marked with a lot number. In general, fruit and vegetables are handled unpacked. Consequently, pre-packed goods are discriminated.

The Commission has invited comments from Member States.
