Review of Terms of Egg Production (SMT Criteria)
The Ministry has now circulated further details concerning the German proposal to add an additional category to the permitted Special Marketing Terms (SMT) - or as they indicate, a "modified version of existing production systems and not an entirely new system. For previous item, see 24 January 1997.
It is indicated that the system provides for ".. outdoor rearing to allow laying hens access to the fresh air, even in bad weather, while avoiding the harmful effects of inclement weather (sickness among the birds, destruction of the vegetation, etc.).". Full details can be obtained from the Ministry.
Discussion on the topic will be at the next Management Committee meeting on the 18 March.
