CLAIMS – Updating the Register of Claims: Council discussions

The following is an extract from the minutes of the Competiveness Council meeting held on 25th – 26th September 2014:

The Council decided not to oppose the adoption of a Commission regulation authorising the use of the health claim "Supplemental folic acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus" on food supplements which provide at least 400 μg of folic acid per daily portion.

The Commission regulation is subject to the regulatory procedure with scrutiny. This means that now that the Council has given its consent, the Commission may adopt it, unless the European Parliament objects.
