LABELLING - Nutrition Labelling: infringement proceedings against Cyprus and Portugal

The European Commission has sent "Reasoned Opinions" to the governments of Cyprus and Portugal over their failure to notify national implementing measures as required by Directive 2008/100/EC. This Directive amends Directive 90/496/EEC on nutrition labelling for foodstuffs as regards recommended daily allowances, energy conversion factors and definitions. The sending of a "Reasoned Opinion" is the second stage of the infringement procedure laid down in Article 258 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). If the Member States concerned are not able to assure the Commission that this Directive has been transposed to their national legislation, the next step would be for the Commission to lodge cases against them at the European Court of Justice.
