WEIGHTS - Council adopts Directive on Pre-packed products

Extract from the minutes of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council Meeting, 16 July 2007

The Council adopted, in second reading and following an agreement with the European Parliament, a Directive laying down rules on nominal quantities for pre-packed products. (PE-CONS 3621/07)

This Directive is aimed at replacing existing legislation (Directives 75/106/EEC and 80/232/EEC) in order to abolish nominal quantities of package sizes for most sectors and to maintain obligatory nominal quantities for a very limited number of goods, mainly wine and spirits.

The Directive, as amended by the Council and the European Parliament, would allow for a phaseout of national nominal quantities for milk, butter, dried pasta and coffee for a period of maximum five years and for sugar it would be of a maximum of six years. These derogations would not impose any obligation on other Member States to regulate nominal quantities.
