TRADE / SPIRITS – Council discussions on (1) veterinary issues with Russia and (2) on the definition of Vodka

The following are extracts from the minutes of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, 16 April 2007

Veterinary negotiations between EC and Russia

The Council took note of information provided by the Commission on the latest developments in the negotiations in the veterinary field between the EC and the Russian Federation .

All Member States provided the information requested by Russia on veterinary residues within the deadline. Similar request for information have been sent to the Commission with regard to pesticides residues and should be tackled in the coming days.

As regards the embargo on certain Polish commodities, continued efforts are being carried out by the Commission and the Polish sanitary authorities in order to solve the situation, both at technical and political level.

Definition of Vodka

The Council took note of Poland 's concerns about definition of vodka in a proposal on the definition, description, presentation and labelling of spirit drinks (8420/07 and 15902/05).

The proposal is the subject of ongoing negotiations with the European Parliament with a view to reaching a first reading agreement in May (codecision).
