NUTRITION LABELLING - DG SANCO Nutrition Labelling Directive discussion paper

The European Commission is consulting on a discussion paper relating to some technical issues raised by the Nutrition Labelling Directive 90/496/EEC.

The main issues raised in the document relate to:

• updating the Dietary Reference Values for vitamins and minerals
• definitions of nutrients
• energy conversion factors
• tolerances for nutrient declaration

There are several questions posed by the Commission with regard to each of these four areas.

The Food Standards Agency will consult stakeholders on any such proposals. Any comments and view will help to inform the UK 's response to the Commission.

This is an initial discussion paper and the views fed back to the Commission may shape any proposals to amend the existing legislation. Any comments should be forwarded by 30 June 2006 .
