GM FOOD - Genetically modified maize BT 11 - Council discussions

Extract from the Minutes of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting on 26 April 2004

The Council examined the proposal for a Council Decision (5916/04) authorising the placing on the market of sweet corn from genetically modified maize line Bt 11as a novel food or novel food ingredient under Regulation (EC) N 258/97 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

In January 2004 the Commission submitted to the Council this proposal following the absence of a favourable opinion from the Standing Committee on the Food Chain on authorising Bt11 sweet corn as a novel food.

The Presidency took note that the positions adopted at the level of the Standing Committee did not change sufficiently to allow a decision to be reached in Council on the Commission's proposal.
