PARNUTS - Parnuts consultation update

In the wake of revisions made to draft directives at the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health, consultation documents have been altered.

The draft Food for Particular Nutritional Uses (Addition of Substances for Specific Nutritional Purposes) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2004 has been altered in two ways:

• Calcium sulphate as a source of calcium, and the amino acid salts, N-acetyl-L-cysteine and N-acetyl-L-methionine, have been added to Schedule 1 and removed from Schedule 2 following positive opinions by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA);
• the vitamin E entry in Schedule 2 has been corrected.

There was also an error in the Partial Regulatory Impact Assessment, in its reference to an eight-week consultation. This is a 12-week consultation and so the deadline for comments is 5 March 2004.
