CLAIMS - Draft Proposal for a Regulation on Nutrition, Functional and Health Claims made on foods

Commission's draft proposal for a Regulation on Nutrition, Functional and Health Claims made on foods. (Working document SANCO/1832/2002)

Comments are required on this draft proposal from the Commission. As you may be aware, the Commission published a Discussion Paper on Nutrition and Functional Claims (SANCO/1341/2001) used in food labelling last summer. The many comments received were used to inform the UK's position and the FSA's response to the Commission's request for comments.

The Commission has now published a draft proposal (covering health claims as well as what it terms nutrition and functional claims) and has called an expert meeting in Brussels on Tuesday 9 July.

The FSA anticipate that the Commission may formally adopt the proposal within weeks of that meeting; that formal proposal will, of course, be subject to the normal negotiating process and we will continue to consult you during negotiations. At this point the FSA would welcome any comments on the draft proposal by 5 July so that they can influence discussions on 9 July.
