LABELLING CLAIMS - Nutrition, Functional and Health Claims made on foods

Commission's draft proposal for a Regulation on Nutrition, Functional and Health Claims made on foods.

The FSA is inviting comments on this draft proposal from the Commission. Copies can be found at:

The European Commission published a Discussion Paper on Nutrition and Functional Claims (SANCO/1341/2001) used in food labelling last summer [See EU News Item 23 May 2001]. Many comments on this and views were used to inform the UK's position and the FSA's response to the Commission's request for comments. The Commission has now published a draft proposal (covering health claims as well as what it terms nutrition and functional claims) and has called an expert meeting in Brussels on Tuesday 9 July. The FSA anticipate that the Commission may formally adopt the proposal within weeks of that meeting; that formal proposal will, of course, be subject to the normal negotiating process and the FSA will continue to consult during negotiations.

At this point the FSA would welcome any comments on the draft proposal by Friday 5 July so that they can influence discussions on 9 July.
