SUPPLEMENTS - Food supplements - support for common position

Debate on the Report on the Council common position for adopting a European Parliament and Council directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to food supplements

The recommendation for second reading was adopted with one amendment, which is proposing to lengthen the period for the submission of safety dossiers to 36 months after the directive's entry into force. This extra time was considered crucial to give small companies longer to comply with the directive.

Environment Committee Chairwoman Caroline JACKSON (EPP-ED, South West) vehemently protested against the unacceptable behaviour of certain lobbyists, which, she said had gone beyond all limitations. The rapporteur, for instance, had been threatened and MEPs had been bombarded with e-mails. She urged the President to take measures against this. It was announced that the college of queastors is already looking into this matter.
