Standing Committee for Foodstuffs, Extract from minutes of meeting - 17-18 December 2001

PARNUTS - Use of Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) in infant formulae and follow-on formulae

Discussion on Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) in infant formulae and follow-on formulae.

On the 13 December the Scientific Committee on Food had expressed an additional statement on the use of resistant short chain carbohydrates in infant formulae and in follow-on formulae.

The Committee expressed its appreciation to the Scientific Committee on Food for its speedy consideration of the matter. Members of the Committee were reassured by the additional statement. It was noted that the possible beneficial effects of FOS and GOS still needed to be assessed.

The Committee agreed that consideration should be given to whether there is either a need to produce formal guidelines on the data that should be collected on new ingredients in infant formulae or follow-on formulae, or a need for a European Community wide process of prior authorisation for new ingredients. This will be considered further when the Directive on Infant Formulae and Follow-on Formulae is revised.
