Statement by the Scientific Committee on Food on the use of resistant short chain carbohydrates in infant formula and follow-on formulae

The statement by the Scientific Committee on Foods (SCF) had been circulated to Member States. The Commission explained further information had been submitted and it was hoped the SCF would be able to review this prior to the next Committee meeting. The Commission sought Members views. In general Members favoured waiting until the SCF had commented before taking action although there was a request for urgent action to be taken. The Commission reminded the Committee that under Article 12 of Directive 89/398/EEC a Member State could take action on public health grounds if they considered that appropriate; they should then inform the Commission so that the necessity of action on a Community-wide basis could be considered
