GM FOODS - Standing Committee on Foodstuffs - Exchange of views on new information on molecular data of "Roundup Ready" soybean

Belgian presented a document with a summary of the new information on Roundup Ready soybean line 40-3-2 and its safety evaluation conducted so far, as well as conclusions to be drawn from these dossier in respect to the enforcement of EU legislation on GMOs (Novel Foods Regulation 258/97 and Directive 2001/18 on the deliberate release of GMOs into the environment).

The conclusions of the safety evaluation conducted so far by the UK and the Netherlands Scientific Committees involved as well as the Belgian Biosafety Council were, that there is no evidence of additional risks in respect to the biosafety of this product on the market.

An exchange of views on the necessary data on the molecular characterisation of the GMO in other and future dossiers took place.

It was noticed that this topic was also for discussion at the 27th meeting of competent authorities under Directive 90/220 in Stockholm on 19 June 2001.
