LABELLING - Opinion on a Draft Commission Directive amending Annex I to Directive 2000/13/EC

A Draft Commission Directive was presented. There was broad support from a majority of Member States. However, it was felt that the reference to "mechanically recovered meat" deserved further consideration. Whilst all Member States shared the opinion that "mechanically recovered meat" should not be included in the category "meat", but should be labelled separately, they were divergent views as to the definition of "mechanically recovered meat" to which this Directive should be referring. It was agreed that the Commission would clarify this matter in the light of progress in Council on the recast of the Hygiene legislation.

Some Member States further indicated that the maximum limits proposed for the fat content were too high. This was a concern in Denmark, in particular. The Commission representative reminded that the proposed limits were only for the purpose of quantitative labelling of "meat" as an ingredient in compound foods but had no impact on the actual fat content of the products concerned.

It was agreed that the Standing Committee would deliver an opinion on this Draft at its next meeting.
