Standing Committee on Foodstuffs, 2-3 April 2001

NOVEL FOODS - Opinion on a Draft Commission decision on authorising the placing on the market of pasteurised fruit-based preparations produced using high-pressure pasteurisation as a novel food ingredient under regulation (EC) No. 258/97 of the European Parliament and of the Council.

It was clarified that the mention "pasteurised by high-pressure treatment" in the labelling of the product should refer to the fruit preparations as ingredient, but not necessarily to the whole product.

Germany suggested that a follow-up study should be carried out concerning the allergenic potential of allergens that are inactivated by heat treatment under the conditions of high-pressure treatment. The Draft Decision was however not changed in this respect.

Sweden explained that they were opposed to the Draft Decision because they considered that the specification for pH, storage temperature etc. should be applied to the whole foodstuffs and not only to the fruit-preparations.

The Committee delivered a favourable opinion by qualified majority.
