GM FOODS - Traceability and Labelling

The European Commission recently issued a discussion document on the traceability and labelling of GM foods. This paper sets out a range of options for traceability and labelling of GMOs and products derived from GMOs. The labelling options range from maintaining the status quo to the consideration of labelling of all products produced with the help of GMOs. The discussion document is available on the European Commission web site:

At the Standing Committee for Foodstuffs meeting on December 14th the Commission (DG SANCO) announced that it intends to take the discussion paper forward by drafting a Council / European Parliament Regulation on the traceability of all GMOs and derived products. They will also develop a proposal requiring the labelling of all foods derived from GMOs, although the precise form of this proposal hasn't been decided yet. The proposals will be discussed internally within the commission in January and are expected to be published in the first quarter of next year.
