9 February 2000: ADDITIVES - Draft Amendment to Directive 96/77/EC Laying Down Specific Purity Criteria on Food Additives Other Than Colours and Sweeteners

Scottish Executive Letter, 9 February 2000

Draft Amendment to Directive 96/77/EC Laying Down Specific Purity Criteria on Food Additives Other Than Colours and Sweeteners

The European Commission Working Group met in Brussels on 24 and 25 January 2000 to discuss the above draft amendment with relation to certain food additive specifications (a copy was included in the letter)

The document (WGA 002/00) discussed at the meeting contained specifications for those additives which were not agreed at the previous Working Group meeting in October. Additives not included in document 002/00 are those which were finalised at the October meeting and these will be included in a document currently in preparation for the Standing Committee for Food, possibly in April. Where the Commission considered that sufficient information had been provided following the October meeting, the specifications concerned will also be included in the later document and were not discussed.

Specifications for the following additives were included in WGA 002/00. Since these are already to be found in other directives (sweeteners or colours) they will be referenced directly to those directives. E170(i), E420(i) and (ii), E421, E950, E951, E953, E957, E959, E965(i) and (ii), E966 and E967.

The Commission requested more information from industry in a few cases. The information required on each additive concerned is specified as an attachment to the letter and relates to the following:
E353, E425(i), E425(ii), E504(i), E504(ii), E553b, E555, E558, E559, E620-625, E626-629, E630-633, E634-635, E905, E912.

As the Commission has arranged for translation to begin shortly any comments or information is required no later than 14 March 2000.
