GM Food Labelling
The final texts of the new EC Regulations concerning the labelling of genetically modified foods were adopted on 10 January and published in the Official Journal of the European Communities (OJ) on 11 January, and following their publication, they have become:
- EC Regulation 49/2000 amending Council Regulation 1139/98 concerning the compulsory indication on the labelling of certain foodstuffs produced from genetically modified organisms of particulars other than those provided for in Directive 79/112/EEC. (This relates to the extension of GM labelling rules to foods which are to be delivered as such to mass caterers, and the introduction of a 1% threshold.)
- EC Regulation 50/2000 on the labelling of foodstuffs and food ingredients containing additives and flavourings that have been genetically modified or have been produced from genetically modified organisms.
The EC Regulations will come into force on 10 April 2000 (ninety days after their publication in the OJ). The JFSSG are currently consulting on a draft Statutory Instrument to make provision for the enforcement in England of these regulations.
