JFFSG Letter, 12 January 2000

Draft Commission Directive Amending Directive 95/31/EC: Amendments To Purity Criteria For Mannitol And Maltitol Syrup

The Commission has issued a proposal which amends the existing purity criteria for mannitol (E 421) and maltitol syrup (E 965 (ii)). In the case of mannitol, a new method of manufacture has recently been favourably evaluated for safety by the EC Scientific Committee on Food (SCF). The existing specification for mannitol has therefore been amended to introduce new criteria which any mannitol manufactured by this new method must meet in addition to the existing criteria. In the case of maltitol syrup, a new type of syrup, which contains a broader range of high molecular weight hydrogenated polysaccharides, has recently been considered acceptable for use in food by the SCF. The assay section of the existing specification for maltitol syrup has therefore amended to accommodate this new product.

The Commission proposal is due to be discussed at the next meeting of the Additives Working Group on 24/25 January and, if Member States are content, it is likely to go forward for agreement at the next Standing Committee for Foodstuffs meeting on 16 February.
