SPIRIT DRINKS - Commission consultation: Labelling of alcoholic beverages – use of allusions and of compound terms (updated technical specifications)

. .

Commission consultations: COMMISSION DELEGATED REGULATION (EU) amending Regulation (EU) 2019/787 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards:

  • the labelling of spirit drinks resulting from the combination of a spirit drink with one or more foodstuffs
  • allusions to legal names of spirit drinks or geographical indications for spirit drinks in the description, presentation and labelling of other spirit drinks

A copy of both of these consultation documents is available on this site (click on images)

Both these 2 separate consultations are open until the 23 April 2021. For more details, see: Compound Terms and Allusions. The following are the start of the consultation pages:

Use of Allusions

This initiative, which is linked to the new Spirit Drinks Regulation, updates technical specifications for spirit drinks in order to provide consumers with more accurate information.

It updates EU labelling rules where there are allusions (direct or indirect references) to the names of spirit drinks on the labels of alcoholic beverages other than spirit drinks and liqueurs. This is so consumers will have correct information about the actual name of the resulting beverage.

Use of Compound Terms

This initiative, which is linked to the new Spirit Drinks Regulation, updates technical specifications for spirit drinks in order to provide consumers with more accurate information.

It updates EU labelling rules for alcoholic beverages produced by combining spirit drinks with other foodstuffs (compound terms). This is so consumers will have correct information about the actual name of the resulting beverage.
