Why we are consulting

Food irradiation is a decontaminating process which can be used to kill pathogenic bacteria that cause food poisoning, such as salmonella or campylobacter. Irradiation of food cannot replace proper food handling and irradiated foods still require appropriate refrigeration and to be cooked prior to consumption when necessary. Food irradiation can also delay fruit ripening, and help stop vegetables such as potatoes and onions from sprouting. This open public consultation aims at collecting factual information, views, opinion and experience on the application of EU legislation on irradiation of food and food ingredients. The Commission will use information collected through this public consultation, together with other data, to evaluate the EU regulatory framework for irradiation of food.
