GMOs - EU extends phasing out period for traces of obsolete GM oilseed rapes

The European Union decided today to extend with three years the phasing out period for traces of obsolete (previously authorised and cultivated in Canada but currently not commercialised anywhere as such) GM oilseed rapes (Ms1xRf1, Ms1xRf2 and Topas 19/2). Member States endorsed the European Commission Decision to that effect at the meeting of the Standing Committee on the Plant, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF) of 16 November 2016.

The Commission based this Decision on the notification of test results by the authorisation holder (Bayer CropScience AG), which have shown a decreasing trend of presence of these events. The measures undertaken by the company have allowed the removal of practically all the GM material from the market, however very minute traces (<0.1%) might still be present in the oilseed rape commodity shipments from Canada at the end of the current transitional period.

During this additional phasing-out period, the Decision requires that the authorisation holder continue:
