Department of Food Technology and Quality Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has the responsibility for food development and food control systems. Nepal has reviewed its food law according to Codex and the SPS Agreement. Nepal has formed a National Codex Committee which includes representatives of ministries, industry and consumers. Consumers are given due priority in standard setting at the national level.
The standards for many food products are in the process of harmonization with Codex standards, such as the standards of fats and oils and milk products. FAO/ILSI, and SAARC together have held workshops on the Harmonization of Food Standards in SAARC Region with the initiative of DFTQC. In order to follow Codex standards at the national level, there is a need for capacity building in food inspection systems, risk analysis and strengthening of laboratory analytical services.
