Extract from the Report of the 15th Session of the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Asia, Seoul , Korea , 21 - 24 November 2006 (See http://www.codexalimentarius.net/download/report/664/al30_15e.pdf )
Several ministries are in charge of food control, depending on the food categories concerned. In order to ensure the quality and safety of foods, the government refers to international standards developed by FAO and WHO. Bangladesh has a very well developed laboratory system which conducts chemical and biological analysis and a special committee to deal with food safety issues.
Bangladesh could not fully adopt Codex standards as national standards because Bangladesh has its own food culture, diet pattern and habits. However Bangladesh has adopted several Codex standards as national standards and has the intention to improve this situation and to participate effectively in Codex. As regards the implementation and enforcement of standards, the main difficulties arise out of lack of awareness among the people.
