Areas of Interest:

I am a Chemist specialised in Bioseparations. Also I have significant expertise in the fundamentals of gas-liquid dispersions and interfacial phenomena in gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems. During my PhD I developed a novel technique, colloidal gas aphrons (CGA), based on the formation of gas-liquid dispersions to separate proteins. Also while working at the TU Delft as a post-doctoral researcher I developed a novel method for the separation of solid bioproducts such as semi-synthetic penicillins. Investigations during this period led to the application and filing of a patent. I am generally interested in bioprocessing of bioactive products and their application as functional food ingredients and/or drugs such as food protein derived bioactive peptides. These are the main research projects I am currently developing:

-Enzymatic production of bioactive peptides from whey

  • 'Enzymatic production of ACE-inhibitory peptides from b-lactoglobulin' PhD sponsored by Connacyt, Mexico and Amano enzymes (October 04/08)
  • Industrial CASE BBSRC studentship with Kerry Foods (October 2008/ 2012)

-Separation of value added proteins from whey by ion exchange membranes

  • PhD sponsored by BBSRC-CASE with Volac plc. (August 05/08)

-Recovery of carotenoids from fermentation broth

  • 'Recovery of astaxanthin from fermentation broth by colloidal gas aphrons'PhD studentship sponsored by The University of Reading (RETF) and Tate & Lyle plc. (October 05/08)
  • PhD sponsored by Thai Government (2008/11)

-Production and purification of biosurfactants from Bacillus subtillis

  • 'Recovery and purification of surfactin from Bacillus subtillis fermentation by a two-step ultrafiltration process' and a PhD sponsored by Malasyan Government (May 05/08)
  • On-going research collaboration with Lille University (France)

-Recovery of value added products from wine waste

Collaboration started with the University of Piacenza (Italy) on recovery of polyphenols from wine waste extracts by CGA – British Council Award (December 2007/08)
