Postgraduate research
The PhD and MPhil programmes in Fine Art offer you the chance to pursue research in various aspects of contemporary art practice and theory at a top-class research institution with experts in the field. The relationship between you and your supervisor is crucial. Every care is taken to ensure excellent supervision and appropriate guidance. As well as a supervisor you will have advisors within the Department, and elsewhere in the Faculty if advantageous to your research, chosen for the specific contribution and help they can offer towards the successful completion of your project. You will be required to discuss your work with your advisory committee for direction and assistance at regular intervals, and to present your research to the Department's Research Seminar.
Research degrees are awarded to a student who has undertaken a critical investigation in an approved topic and demonstrated a clear understanding of the research methods appropriate to the study. As part of your PhD you will be required to produce a thesis and to defend it in an oral examination.
