Our department has a long tradition of scholarship and innovation. Together our staff and students work to make the study of English Literature not only a rewarding challenge and active pleasure, but also the foundation of a critical and cultural awareness that will remain with you for life.
Supportive atmosphere with a high level of individual care
Everyone, from professors to lecturers, teaches at every level of our degree course. Seminar groups are small, so you will be able to get to know your seminar tutor and fellow students. Learn more about how we teach you.
Third year modules allow you to do 'hands on' work in manuscript studies, scholarly editing and book history with acknowledged experts. Whether you study Children's Literature or contemporary American fiction, you become part of the conversation about how English Studies is developing.
All of our students have the opportunity to undertake an academic placement during their time with us. This would allow you to extend your studying life into the wider world and gain some unique insights with your independent research. Learn about our academic placements.
We take the future of our students seriously and ensure that you have access to all the help you need to take your prestigious honours degree into satisfying and rewarding career choices.
Our Creative Writing pathway
This offers you the opportunity to add Creative Writing to the title of your degree. Our Creative Writing workshops and the publication of our annual Creative Arts Anthology allow all students to become involved in creative writing.
