Our modules cover a wide range of topics, and each course is led by Professors and Lecturers with research-based subject expertise. Our staff are innovative and energetic individuals who aim to guide your academic progress, helping you to achieve your highest potential. We are keen to admit enthusiastic students who have a passion for English Literature, and a desire to explore the subject further.
The Department offers innovative and flexible undergraduate degree courses, which are highly regarded by employers seeking top quality graduates. Our courses will equip you with excellent skills and knowledge giving you a wide choice of many different career paths, including working in industry and media, or pursuing academic research. Prospective employers have a very high regard for the intellectual training, versatility and resourcefulness that you bring from your degree studies in English.
You can take either a Single Honours degree in English Literature or one of our Joint Honours courses, full- or part-time. In Year 1, all students take English alongside modules in other subjects. This system allows considerable flexibility since you can often change your final degree course from single to joint or vice versa.
The English Literature programme offers a stimulating mixture of traditional and contemporary studies, allowing you a great deal of flexibility to decide what combination of options best suits your interests. After the groundwork of Part 1, you choose your individual pathway through the broader period or thematic modules of Part 2 and a wide range of specialised options in Part 3. To a large extent, therefore, you can design your own degree.
Our unique professional development scheme, The Professional Track, and our academic placement opportunities allows students to explore different career areas before they graduate and provides essential skills to equip them for the world of work. You also have the chance to study abroad for a year.
We believe that our undergraduate programme is exciting, challenging and flexible. And our students agree: in the last National Student Survey, final year students rated the quality of learning and teaching in English Department very highly.
For their final degree, students can take English Literature jointly with a number of other subjects. Joint degree students take half their modules in the Department of English Language and Literature and half in the other subject. In their final year, students have the option to submit a joint dissertation, on a topic that links their study in both subjects, chosen by themselves with the advice of staff, and jointly supervised by staff from both subjects.
