Undergraduate courses with QTS as an outcome

Everyone remembers their first teacher. Enthuse and inspire the next generation with a primary teaching qualification from one of the country's leading providers of teacher training.

As a primary teacher you will work with young children aged 5-11. This creative and incredibly rewarding career gives you the opportunity to shape young minds; helping them to develop socially, emotionally and intellectually.

We have a vast breadth of experience in the Institute of Education, and all our academics have experience of teaching in the classroom. You will benefit from lots of high quality placement opportunities as we have strong partnerships with over 300 local schools.

Our BA Primary Education courses help you to develop the skills and knowledge you need to teach across the different primary age ranges; you will also have the opportunity to specialise in one of four subject areas.

How you'll learn

Our BA Primary Education courses blend academic and practical learning through a combination of school placements and university-based sessions. You will develop an understanding of children's learning and at the same time focus on your specialist subject.

Your tutors are from a diverse and incredibly experienced community and the content of your degree draws on their knowledge and research. You will benefit from their expertise and proficiency in a wide range of educational settings and learning environments, and the passion they have for their individual subjects.

You will investigate the changing role of the classroom teacher, the intellectual, emotional and social development of children and the context of the school. Interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage you to engage, reflect and challenge.

We will help you to develop a toolkit of knowledge and skills which will ensure you are well prepared to tackle challenges and opportunities throughout your training and your career.

Specialist subjects
The BA Primary Education with subject specialism courses enable you to develop your teaching practice alongside studying your chosen subject at university level. Your tutors engage with research and have experience of teaching your chosen subject at primary age and beyond.

You will explore your chosen subject through a series of workshops, taught lessons, school-based opportunities, seminars and independent study, helping you to develop the knowledge and skills to teach your chosen subject. There is also the opportunity for you to gain training as a subject leader in your specialist subject. Alongside your core learning, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to investigate and reflect on your own practice.

“Trainees are universal in their view that the training they receive provides them with the knowledge and skills they need to become effective teachers.”

Ofsted, Initial teacher education inspection report – September 2016

Support

At the Institute of Education we have created an open and inclusive environment for everyone, a community which promotes a sense of wellbeing and belonging. You will enjoy high levels of individual support and your tutors are on hand to offer regular guidance and support.

Our students often comment on the incredible levels of support they receive at the Institute of Education; in the 2016 National Student Survey, 95% of students were satisfied with the academic support they received in Education, and Ofsted have also recognised the strength of our pastoral support and the care we provide.

Whilst in the University, our world-class academics will support you, and whilst you are on a placement, you will be fully supported by University-trained subject mentors.

As well as your University tutors and school-based mentors, there is a Specialist Support team on hand at the London Road campus to offer guidance and support. A peer support network is also available - which benefits you both during your studies and throughout your career.

Our relationship with you continues beyond your training and graduation. We recognise the demands placed on our new teachers in their first NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) year and therefore continue to support you throughout the transition.
