PGCE Secondary Modern Foreign Language

The PGCE Secondary MFL course at Reading:

  • has consistently been judged as excellent in both internal and external reviews
  • is part of a PGCE programme that was described by Her Majesty's Inspectors as 'outstanding' (November 2006)
  • gives trainees a theoretical framework for language teaching and practical advice on the preparation, conduct and evaluation of language lessons
  • is taught by staff with wide practical experience in schools and international reputations as experts in the field of MFL teaching and learning.

PGCE MFL Trainees at Reading:

  • are placed in carefully selected partnership schools which provide opportunities to work with skilled and experienced practitioners in the languages classroom
  • have access to a wide range of teaching materials and equipment (video, multimedia computers and satellite TV) in University
  • have the opportunity to enhance their subject knowledge through a range of self-study materials and tutor-led sessions
  • enjoy working in a multi-cultural and supportive group at University
  • have the opportunity to develop skills in teaching another subject through French as part of a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) scheme.

Applicants should:

  • possess a good degree in the foreign language (French, German or Spanish) and demonstrate a high level of linguistic competence. Native speakers need to have an element of language study in their degree
  • be able to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to, and enthusiasm for, language teaching and working with young people
  • have a good knowledge of UK state secondary schools
  • be well-informed, critical thinkers and lively communicators.
