PGCE Secondary History

The PGCE Secondary History course at Reading:

  • has consistently achieved top grades in Ofsted inspections;
  • is taught by staff with a national and international reputations as experts in the field of History education and who have worked with various organisations such as the Historical Association, QCA and QCDA, the TDA and Council of Europe;
  • is taught in first class facilities.

PGCE History Trainees at Reading

  • are placed in carefully selected partnership schools;
  • work with experienced History teachers who are all specially trained as mentors;
  • are highly sought after by schools nationally and enjoy an employment rate second to none;
  • are encouraged to draw upon previous experience, both historical and pedagogic;
  • are encouraged to demonstrate originality and initiative;
  • work hard, play hard, learn lots and have a great time!

Applicants should be aware that we are looking for candidates:

  • with good academic credentials (normally you should possess a 2.1 degree in History or if holding a joint or related degree (e.g.Archaeology) demonstrate that 50%+ of the degree contains history related modules);
  • who have a good understanding of their historical specialism, but also understand how history works;
  • who demonstrate an enthusiasm for history and show that they can communicate this to young people;
  • who are reflective and can comment upon their own experience of being taught or from observation in school lucidly;
  • who are aware of how pupils may view history in schools and the pressures that teachers face in their everyday work;
  • who are 'team players'.

We are clearly not looking for the 'finished article' at this stage, but looking to identify candidates' potential to teach history well.
