Staff Profile:Dr Tim Williams
- Name:
- Dr Tim Williams
- Job Title:
- Associate Professor
- Responsibilities:
- Leader PGCert SENCO.
- MA Module Convenor - Autism (EDM077).
- Areas of Interest:
Developmental psychopathology especially those disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) where a major symptom is repetitive behaviour:
1. OCD related research.
2. Morphing - the belief that one might be changed through contact with undesirable things/people. I have been involved clinically and in research in to how this affects children.
3. Intrusive thoughts especially musical ones (earworms).
4. Cognitive behaviour Therapy for OCD: Autism Spectrum Disorders - how can this be adapted or changed to take account of the specific difficulties that people with ASD have with talking and making a relationship - both of which are components of cognitive behaviour therapy.
5. Habit disorders aka Impulse Control Disorders aka Repetitive Behaviour Disorders:
(i) Nail biting aka onychophagia - why do people bite their nails.
(ii) Hair pulling aka trichotillomania.
Special Education Policy and Inclusive Education especially analysis of policy and practice
1. Literacy especially unusual reading skills.
2. Alternative and Augmentative Communication.
3. Language in unusual populations:
(i) Oral vocabulary - why do some words appear harder to learn than others for people with ASD?
(ii) Word learning - could people with ASD learn about word meanings through non-spoken language methods? Is this better than speaking with an interlocutor?
4. Special Educational Needs and legislation:
(i) What happens in practice when a young person needs help to access education?
(ii) Whose voice determines the resources?
5. Mental health in Schools: First aid - how should schools help young people in crisis?
Masters Level Supervision offered in these areas:
- Quantitative approaches for investigating psychopathology (psychological disorders) especially in the areas of autism spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and other repetitive behaviour disorders such as trichotillomania.
- Investigating educational provision for young people with autism spectrum disorders including qualitative investigations.
PhD/EdD Level Supervision offered in these areas:
- Quantitative approaches to investigating psychopathology especially in the areas of autism spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder and other repetitive behaviour disorders such as trichotillomania and nail biting.
