Economic Analysis Research Group (EARG)

Graph and penThe Economic Analysis Research Group (EARG) is part of the School of Economics within Henley Business School at the University of Reading. It is a group of economists under the direction of Kerry Patterson, Professor of Econometrics, which focuses on the analysis of core areas of economics and econometrics. Its interests include macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics, with an emphasis on the practical application of theoretical concepts.

Kerry Patterson is co-editor, with Professor Terence Mills of Loughborough University, of the Palgrave Handbook of Econometrics, the first volume (1,100 pages) on Theoretical Econometrics was published in March 2006; he is also editor of the Palgrave Texts in Econometrics; Members of EARG have published widely in core journals in economics, econometrics and statistics; for example, recent publications include articles in The Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, The Journal of Applied Statistics, The Manchester School of Economics, The International Journal of Forecasting and Applied Economics. Members have also advised the Government Economic Service and a number of government departments.

Recent research areas

The economic analysis of the National Health Service, including:

  • a waiting lists model of hospital services
  • an analysis of market oriented reforms of the health services
  • the efficiency of the internal market for hospital services

Household decisions on debt and default, including:

  • the impact of judicial efficiency and the availability of informal credit on default in repayment behaviour
  • household debt and repayment difficulties in the EU
  • housing and equity wealth effects of Italian households
  • the determinants of illegal immigration.

The econometric analysis of non-stationary time series

Banking and macroeconomics, including:

  • separating central banks and government: the separation between a central bank's budget constraint and that faced by the legislative body;
  • banking Structure: the implications of different banking structures for economic growth, credit rationing.
