Collaborative Unit for Biotechnology
Economics & Social Science
CUBES brings together the considerable social science experience and expertise relating to biotechnology issues that lies
scattered among the various schools and departments at the University of Reading. The unit's objective is to facilitate
high quality multi-disciplinary research and consultancy on biotechnology issues, and to complement the University's
strength in biotechnology sciences.
It includes economists, sociologists, political scientists, psychologists and
specialists in law. The bulk of our work has related to agricultural biotechnology,
although with the opening of the School of Pharmacy at Reading, it is anticipated that the group's work will expand to cover a
broader remit.
Apart from its role as an umbrella unit drawing together Reading's work in biotechnology
related social science, CUBES also aims to foster research and communication in this area by organising
workshops, hosting visiting scientists, etc.
