Academic/Teaching and Learning Staff

FLAIRpicThe University of Reading believes that teaching excellence is a key component of our students' experience here at the University; it is therefore essential that:

"Our staff are supported and encouraged in their strong commitment to the enhancement of their teaching practice. We aim to be at the forefront of developing recognised, professional qualifications and improving professional recognition of all staff involved in teaching and learning and we will enhance the reward, recognition and celebration of innovative and inspiring teachers."

(Fourth strand of our University Learning and Teaching Strategy 2013-18).

The University of Reading has a well-established history of supporting new lecturers through our taught Higher Education Academy (HEA) accredited initial professional development programmes. Many of our staff have successfully completed our PGCAP and TLSP programmes and gained HEA Fellow and Associate Fellow status in doing so.

Design work for a replacement taught programme highlighted an opportunity to move beyond initial taught professional development to consider a more holistic approach to continuing professional development for all staff, underpinned by the University's commitment to ensuring a high quality experience for our students through research-informed, innovative and evidence-based approaches to teaching practice and support.

FLAIR DiagramOur newly accredited FLAIR Framework (Facilitating Learning and Teaching Achievement and Individual Recognition) aims to support both new and experienced staff involved in teaching and supporting learning at Reading to engage in professional development activities and gain recognition for development in their academic practice.

Under this overarching FLAIR Framework sit two new areas of provision for the University, namely a taught Academic Practice Programme (APP) for staff relatively new to teaching and supporting learning in HE (which replaces the TLSP and PGCAP), and a non-taught CPD Route for experienced staff. FLAIR is accredited by the HEA which provides external confirmation that it is aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education (UK PSF).
