Placement in industry
Choosing to take a placement year enables you to gain experience of working in industry as part of your degree.
We have excellent links with industry, and you will have the opportunity to undertake work placements and to liaise with employers during your studies. We continually review our courses to ensure that they meet the needs of industry.
Many of the world's high-tech and IT industries have their UK or European headquarters within a short distance of the University. Major international companies such as Microsoft and Cisco Systems are actively involved in our teaching programmes, both through student placements and our industrial advisory board.
If you undertake a placement in industry while you study, you will (on average) find employment more quickly after you graduate. You are also likely to have a higher starting salary than peers who have not taken work experience (the Brunel report on Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education 2009/10).
An important part of our degree offering is the industrial placement year. BSc Computer Science students can choose the four-year option which includes the same academic content as the three-year BSc Computer Science course, but with an additional 12-month industrial placement during the third year. Our dedicated placement team will help you to secure a year-long paid placement during your degree. We have built up relationships with major companies over many years, many of which have their UK or European headquarters local to Reading.
We provide strong employability support for our students, including advice on CV writing and interview technique, and engage employers and alumni in supporting our students. The placement year is supported by visits from academic staff at the University.
Placement companies include:
Goldman Sachs, GlaxoSmithKline, Sony, Ernst & Young, BBC, Pepsico, BT, KPMG, IBM, HSBC, Deloitte, O2, Intel, Microsoft, M&S, Oracle, John Lewis, Accenture and 3M.
