Careers

Our Computer Science degrees enable you to develop the core technical and soft skills desired by employers. You will be ready for employment immediately after graduation and enter employment market with an awareness of a wide variety of roles across numerous industries.

Students choose Computer Science at the University of Reading because of the wide range of modern technologies they can experience and the superb links we have with our IT industry neighbours: Microsoft, Cisco Systems, Oracle, Intel and other blue chip companies.

Choose the career path that's right for you

Most of our graduates go into careers in the software industry, ranging from small start-up companies to multinationals. Some of them choose to develop their career in the public service, the teaching professions, and IT support to investment banking. A number of our students have started their own businesses; others have joined research groups in universities and research institutes pursuing further studies and an academic career.

Enhance your career opportunities

Design, planning and team working skills are essential for your future career and are valuable to employers in a wide variety of industries. There is a strong career management theme running throughout the degrees, with a series of skills development opportunities.

We run regular workshops and mock interviews jointly with companies such as IBM and Ernst & Young, who put you through their real assessment centres. This will refine your interview skills and give you experience of recruitment methods.

Develop the skills you need

Our Computer Science degrees aren't just about teaching you computing – they are designed to prepare you with critical thinking and analytic skills for a rewarding and challenging career in the areas of your choice, whether that be commercially focused or research based.

Typical application areas include programming, software engineering, information security/cybersecurity, network design and implementation, database design and administration, data analytics, systems testing, systems integration, website design and development, and IT consulting.

Careers support and skills development

Throughout your studies, you'll be able to take advantage of opportunities to develop key employability skills, for example:

  • You will be assigned a personal tutor and be offered regular tutorials.
  • A placements advice drop-in session, run by our Placement Team, focuses on finding the right placement, applications, CVs and interview technique.
