Echinoderms

Edible sea urchin and the common starfishEchinoderms are marine invertebrates and include starfish, sea cucumbers and sea urchins of which you can see many fine specimens in the museum. Starfish have amazing powers of regeneration; look at the specimen growing new arms probably following an attack by a predator. They feed through a mouth in the centre of the body and possess up to five jaws.

Echinoderms are more closely related to vertebrates than most marine invertebrates. They have a common ancestor with chordates (which includes humans), though they lack a notochord (a stiffening rod along the back).
