As a postgraduate research student in the School of the Built Environment at Reading, you will be part of an international centre of excellence for research.

Our Doctoral Programmes

We offer three doctoral programmes within the School of the Built Environment with many opportunities to explore research topics which span interdisciplinary boundaries.

An introduction to the school

The School of the Built Environment at the University of Reading is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence with internationally renowned expertise in the design, construction, operation and use of buildings and infrastructure.

The School's remit extends 'across the scales' with the aim of making the built environment work better for society. Our work explores the physical, ecological, social and cultural environments that affect people's lives, including quality of life, sustainability of communities, wealth generation and long-term resilience. We offer an interdisciplinary approach to your research, drawing together expertise across a range of disciplines, including: architecture, design, science and engineering, social science and management.

You will be part of a supportive and collaborative global community of students, staff, alumni and external research partners. We value the breadth of perspectives, wide range of expertise and international experience which our diverse student and staff body brings to our learning community. Our academics are friendly and approachable, and will support you throughout your studies.

World-leading research

The School of the Built Environment has an established global reputation for the quality and breadth of our academic and applied research. In the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014) 83% of the University of Reading's research in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning is rated world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). The University of Reading is also ranked 3rd in the UK for research impact in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning (Times Higher Education Institutions Ranked by Subject, 2014, based on its analysis of REF 2014).

Research in the School is organised into three key research groups:

  • Organisations, People and Technology
  • Energy and Environmental Engineering
  • Urban Living.

PhD students are aligned with the research group which best reflects their interests. This embeds each student within a community of research-active academics working on a broad spectrum of externally funded projects.
