Our research areas
We draw together expertise across a range of disciplines including architecture, organisation and management, design, sustainability, procurement, sociology, economics, energy and engineering. The pivotal role of the built environment is to deliver quality of life and wealth generation is at the heart of our three main research areas:

We undertake applied research across the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sectors to meet the needs of a diverse range of stakeholders throughout wider society.
Our research, rooted in the real-world, is considered particularly valuable owing to its independence. National and international supporting organisations include government institutions, policy think-tanks, professional and trade organisations, supra-national organisations, companies, charities and other research institutions. Our academics are widely published, and we focus strongly on knowledge dissemination and the practical application of that knowledge in the field.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) Architecture, Built Environment and Planning at the University of Reading ranks:

The TSBE Centre and industry collaborations
The Technologies for Sustainable Built Environments (TSBE) Centre provides businesses with access to the University of Reading's world-leading research into energy, environmental engineering and the built environment. We exist to link together forward-thinking businesses with excellent research.
Providing a range of services to companies of all sizes and giving answers to often complex business questions that are difficult for businesses to face on their own, the TSBE Centre combines industry knowledge with rigorous academic research, creating robust solutions to real-world business problems.
