How you'll learn

Study with world-leading academics, in our truly interdisciplinary School and benefit from our wide range of expertise and international experience.

Teaching is delivered in one-week modules, through a mixture of lectures, participative activities and study/research time. Between the taught module weeks you will study for your dissertation and complete assignment work. Assessment is through a range of different methods, including written assignments, online tests, group work, presentations and exams. We foster an environment where we engage postgraduate students in the co-creation of knowledge and understanding to learn from each other's experiences.

Research-led teaching

All of our academics are involved in both teaching and research: this enables them to feed their research directly into their teaching. This provides you with direct access to the latest cutting-edge thinking and enables you to be part of a unique learning experience across a broad range of individual subject areas.

You will learn alongside academics who are experts in their field; our academics are active researchers who write the textbooks and journal papers from which you will study, directly exposing you to the latest research.

Our academics' research specialisms include building and urban environmental quality, urban green infrastructure, energy systems behaviour, building information modelling, designing for healthy lives and wellbeing, and urban environments.

Our teaching and research is grounded in professional practice. As part of the sector we understand the industries with which we align, we place emphasis on staying in touch with an ever-changing environment and we engage with current challenges.

This means your studies will be directly related to industry and practice, as you work on real projects and case studies, as well as taking part in site visits and field trips, ensuring your education is relevant to the sector.

Develop skills across disciplines

Our interdisciplinary approach teaches you the skills and knowledge you need to further develop your career: you will learn how to analyse and discuss complex challenges from different viewpoints, how to problem-solve and how to be a leader in industry. As part of the School of the Built Environment, which brings Construction Management and Engineering together with Architecture, and through our links with the Department of Real Estate and Planning, you will also learn how to work collaboratively with different disciplines, reflecting real ways of working in industry. This will enable you to be adaptable and resilient in a constantly evolving and ever-changing sector.

We work at the interface between management and engineering. As part of our interdisciplinary approach we place emphasis on understanding the broader context; a focus on the technologies and practices of construction management and engineering is complemented with a focus on the application of social sciences, including law, economics, and management, to ensure a holistic view.

Our interdisciplinary approach also allows our postgraduate students to come from a variety of disciplines, including backgrounds not related to construction, and to move into a variety of careers, utilising the knowledge and skills learned from studying with us. Working with students from a variety of backgrounds offers many benefits and brings different perspectives to the learning environment.

Our facilities

We offer world-class facilities that reflect our academic reputation, quality and ambition.

You will have access to the latest digital technology and software, including building information modelling (BIM), building energy and urban microclimate simulations, and 3D laser scanning; as well as access to our immersive virtual reality "CAVE" that enables you to interact with 3D digitised environments. You will be encouraged to explore, experiment with and learn from these innovative technologies.

We also offer access to a dedicated resource room, virtual classrooms and lecture notes. You can submit coursework electronically and take advantage of many other aspects of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to enhance your learning.

Supporting our students

We foster a culture and environment in which excellent student-staff relationships are forged; we take the time to get to know you as an individual and understand your unique aspirations, motivations and needs. Our academics are very engaged with students and can be approached at any time for guidance and support.

We are committed to ensuring that our students receive the best support possible through tutorials, individual meetings and timely feedback. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will help guide you throughout your time at the University, offering advice and assistance whenever necessary. Your tutor will support you to lay the foundations for achieving your goals and aspirations.
