Will Hughes is Professor of Construction Management and Economics at the School of Construction Management and Engineering, University of Reading and Editor-in-Chief of the leading international journal, Construction Management and Economics. He carries out research in the field of construction procurement and project organization. This research includes the control and management of building contracts, the management of design in construction, the analysis of organizational structure and the analysis of procurement systems. Career path
My career in construction began as a trainee joiner in 1972. Through part-time study, I earned an ONC in Construction, which qualified me for university entrance. This led to an honours degree in Building Technology from UMIST, followed by a research assistantship with Professor Peter Burberry, in which we investigated the relationship between design and construction for the Building Research Establishment. Subsequently I took up a research fellowship in the Department of Surveying at Liverpool Polytechnic (now Liverpool John Moores University) with Professor Anthony Walker, on an SERC project looking at organizational effectiveness in construction projects. I then undertook a lectureship in the same department for five years while studying part time for a PhD, which was completed in 1989, on the topic of Organizational Analysis of Building Projects. On completion of the PhD I moved to the University of Reading to take up a lectureship on Construction Law, with a focus on contracts and procurement that has underpinned my work ever since.

I have co-authored seven books on construction management and contractual issues, including a best-selling text book, Construction Contracts: Law and Management that is an essential text in most universities running such courses. Now in its fourth edition it has been reprinted every year since it was first published in 1992. I am editor-in-chief of the international refereed journal Construction Management and Economics, a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Construction Research and the Journal of Asian Architectural and Building Research, as well as an editorial adviser to Taylor & Francis, the leading publisher in this field, see Publications
