Higher Education Carbon Management Programme

In April 2010, the University of Reading signed up to phase 6 of the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme (HECMP). HECMP was launched internally on the 5th July 2010 with the first meeting of the Project Board and the Project Team. The aims of this initiative are to:We're aiming for a 35% reduction

  • Reduce University carbon emissions over 5 years. A target of 35% against a 2008/9 baseline has been agreed
  • Define scope and establish the baseline carbon footprint for the University
  • Determine the value (financial and carbon) at stake of business as usual versus reduction target scenario
  • Generate a project registry outlining reduction opportunities and assessment of how this relates to the target
  • Develop a strategy to engage, communicate and implement carbon management throughout the whole institution with; including academics, students and administrative staff
  • Produce of a Carbon Management Plan with clear governance and review procedures

The project is sponsored externally by the Carbon Trust and internally by Professor Tony Downes, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Collin Robbins, Director of Estates & Facilities Management. The project is being led by Nigel Hodgson, Energy Manager and Denise Shearman, Head of Campus Services.
