Staff Profile:Dr Virginia Campbell

Name::

Dr Virginia L. Campbell

Position / Job Title:

Teaching Fellow in Ancient History

Responsibilities:
  • International Student Officer
  • Acting MA Co-ordinator (autumn; part-time)
  • Acting Part 1 Co-ordinator (spring; part-time)

Office hours:

Fridays, 2-3pm, or by appointment.

Areas of Interest:

My research is primarily focused on the Roman people of the late Republic / early Empire as a distinct cultural group. Utilizing a background in anthropology, archaeology and ancient history, I take a holistic approach to a specific aspect of the ancient world based on both physical and literary evidence, using the art, architecture, epigraphy and literature of the time to enhance our understanding of the Roman world.

My doctoral dissertation was a comparative study of the monumental tombs of Pompeii which used the development of commemorative styles of the funerary structures as a means for assessing the social, economic, cultural, and historical evolution of a specific population.

Further large-scale research projects in development include an assessment of the text of Vitruvius' De Architectura in conjunction with the reality of Roman building, and a study of volcanoes in antiquity.
