Our MChem with a Year in Industry course is designed to produce graduates trained to the high level of professionalism in chemical knowledge needed for a career in Chemistry, either in industry or higher education. In addition our graduates acquire key transferable skills, such as team-working and problem-solving, that are highly valued by today's employers.
The core components of our MChem and BSc Chemistry courses are identical up to the end of Year 2 giving you the flexibility to transfer between courses. This is a high calibre course for students who show sufficient integrity and commitment during their first two years at Reading and, during your second year, you will apply to companies for a one year industrial placement for Year 3. The department has strong links with leading pharmaceutical and chemical companies such as Glaxo SmithKline and ICI and a dedicated Industrial study director who will help you apply for a placement and support you when you are there.
During this year you will carry out an industrial project and continue your studies with distance learning material. You will also gain invaluable insight into the world of commercial research and discover the practical applications of many of the principles already learnt in the course. The year is continually assessed through visits, assignments and an open-book examination .Students returning to continue their studies in Year 4 bring with them a maturity and experience which cannot be taught and remains with them for the rest of their lives.
The final year of this course is identical to the MChem programme and you will choose from a variety of advanced level topics on specialist applications of Chemistry. The research project in Year 4 allows you to spend at least half of your time in one of our labs working with your personal project supervisor and postgraduate research students.
The MChem course at Reading is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry. It fulfils the requirements for the award of CChem and allows our graduates to become Associate Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry (AMRSC); AMRSC members can transfer to full membership (MRSC) after three years of post graduate experience.
