A BSc honours degree in Chemistry is recognised as an excellent qualification for a career in industry, computing, teaching, research, public service, finance and business and this new 'OpenPlus' entry route allows students with an active interest in Chemistry to take a more flexible route into higher education.
For students with minimal qualifications in the sciences this scheme offers you the opportunity to get a BSc Chemistry degree from the University of Reading in a more flexible, cost effective way. This is an exciting new route which leads to two years of full time study. There are no formal entrance requirements but students study for two years (typically) with the OU to gain the basic knowledge in molecular science and maths which allows entry into the second year of the BSc Chemistry course at Reading.
In the first two years students study at home with the OU by distance learning and benefit from the OU's excellent course materials, tutor support, seminars and summer schools. This means you can study in your own time and fit it around a full or part-time job or children. In these units you will develop a thorough grounding in Chemistry. Successful completion of your OU studies will allow you to join the University of Reading in Year 2 of the BSc Chemistry course.
Years 2 and 3 are spent in full-time study at Reading covering topics such as spectroscopy and structure, analytical Chemistry, transition metal Chemistry, kinetics and energetics, molecular organisation and architecture and the quantum world. In addition to these core modules are optional ones in Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Forensic Analysis and languages. Much of your final year is spent working on your final year reseach project, which cultivates a range of transferable skills which are found highly desirable by today's employers. It is also possible to carry out your third year project in a local secondary school, which is an excellent introduction to teaching for students considering going on to a PGCE.
To ensure your study with the OU matches the requirements of second year Chemistry at Reading we have a dedicated support tutor who will help you get up to speed on any areas you might lack confidence in.
